Dense fog enveloped New Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), leading to delayed trains and over 100 deferred flights at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) airport due to poor visibility.
Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan are also expected to experience foggy weather in the next two days.
According to reports, intense fog and cold waves reduced visibility in Noida and Ghaziabad to virtually zero.
Images across the capital, including India Gate, Dhaula Kuan, Nirankari Colony and Shankar Vihar, showed thick fog blankets.
The capital is likely to witness more vagaries of the weather, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting light rain or drizzle today. Minimum temperature likely to settle at 9 degrees Celsius and maximum at 19 degrees Celsius, reports added.
While an airport official denied claims of delayed flights, the Delhi Airport issued an advisory for passengers. An update on social media read: “While landings and take-offs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected.”
“Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” it added.
CAT III facility however allows flight operations in low visibility.
Additionally, the weather office predicts that throughout the early hours, the dominating surface will be from the southeast at a speed of less than 4 kmph. It stated that although the speed would progressively rise in the afternoon, it would decrease to less than 4 kmph in the evening and at night.
The Delhi-NCR region might witness shallow fog or smog in the evening and at night, the India Meteorological Department said.
