Gujarat University (GU) is considering extending the deadline for its proposed twice-a-year admission process after only 27 of the approximately 225 affiliated colleges responded to the university’s request for details. The original deadline, which expired on Friday, has prompted the university to reassess its plans.
On January 4, GU issued a circular outlining its intention to implement the twice-a-year admissions for undergraduate and postgraduate students in the arts, commerce, and science faculties starting from the 2024-25 academic year. The initiative aligns with the guidelines set by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the National Education Policy of India 2020 (NEP 2020).
The circular specifies that during the second session of the 2024-25 academic year, beginning in January 2025, students who missed the initial round of admissions or have passed their exams after the first session will be offered the opportunity to fill vacant seats. Additional seats may also be made available based on the number of applications received.
However, the response to the proposal has been underwhelming, leading some to question the initiative’s viability. Star Payal Iyer, Vice-President of the Gujarat State Principals Association, suggested that the university had not involved colleges in the planning process, nor had it provided clear guidelines regarding the admission procedure. “The question now remains as to how many colleges are willing to join,” said Iyer. “There is no clarity on how the admission and studies will be conducted.” She further emphasised that GU should provide a comprehensive outline of the entire admission process, including whether it will be handled online or directly by the colleges.
