The Kazakh transport ministry reported on Wednesday that a passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines, which was travelling from Baku, the country’s capital, to Russia’s Grozny, crashed in western Kazakhstan. Health officials report that 14 survivors have been admitted to hospitals.
“A jet travelling the Baku-Grozny route went down close to Aktau. Azerbaijan Airlines owns it,” the government said in a statement.
According to Azerbaijan Airlines, the nation’s flag airline, the Embraer 190 “made an emergency landing” just three kilometres from Aktau, an oil and gas hub on the eastern bank of the Caspian Sea.
Kazakh transport ministry informed that the aircraft carried five crew members and 62 passengers. The nation’s emergency ministry said its staff was extinguishing a fire at the location.
“Information about casualties is currently being clarified, but according to preliminary information, there are survivors,” added the statement.
