American Airlines has cancelled all domestic flights on Tuesday. The plans of some travellers for Christmas Eve were interrupted by technical issues.
The airline has not revealed the particular cause of the suspension. On social media, several travellers have complained that their planes were stopped on runways at several airports before being rerouted to terminals.
When a passenger on X (formerly Twitter) became stranded, the company responded, “An estimated timeframe has not been provided, but they’re trying to fix it as soon as possible.”
The carrier’s shares decreased by 3.8% in pre-market trading. The US Federal Aviation Administration’s website stated that the company had requested a statewide ground stop without further information.
The airline only replied to individual comments on Facebook, X and Bluesky.
American Airlines serves over 350 destinations in over 60 countries and has thousands of daily flights.
This interruption follows previous technological problems in the aviation sector, which were connected to CrowdStrike software flaws and Microsoft’s Azure cloud platform.
Two years ago, during the holiday season, Southwest Airlines had experienced a systems failure that cancelled 16,900 flights, impacting 2 million people. The event resulted in a £140 million fine, the most significant civil penalty ever levied for transport interruption.
