The Gujarat Home Department has withdrawn security of around 20 former Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), including former ministers. This move follows a review carried out by the State Intelligence Bureau (SIB) and the home department.
According to sources, the security of 20 former MLAs has been revoked. Some of these MLAs had voluntarily requested the removal of their security, while others had it withdrawn after an assessment of their security requirements.
Sources suggest that the decision was based on the State IB’s report. For instance, Kutiyana MLA Kandhal Jadeja’s commando security has been replaced with district-level protection. Former minister Saurabh Patel’s security has been withdrawn, and one of the two commandos assigned to former Chief Minister Suresh Mehta has been withdrawn.
Security has also been withdrawn for former MLAs who have not faced any threats over the past five years and are no longer actively involved in public life.
MLAs, VIPs and ministers receive security from the Gandhinagar Security Department or district police, in line with established protocol. This protection typically includes armed police or State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) guards.
The most recent review meeting, led to the withdrawal of security for 24 former ministers, including 14 former MLAs from the Bhupendra Patel government and 10 ministers from the Vijay Rupani government.
