Ahmedabad: Parents Withdraw Daughters from Schools Due to Harassment Concerns

| Updated: December 24, 2024 14:33

In the Rakhial area of Ahmedabad, schools are witnessing a worrying pattern as parents withdraw their daughters due to fear of harassment by miscreants. This issue has been compounded by the lack of security personnel, which local councillors say has allowed anti-social elements to loiter near school premises.

There are five schools in the area: Urdu Secondary and Higher Secondary School, Rakhial Gujarati Shala No. 1/2, Rakhial Urdu Shala No. 1, Bapunagar Hindi Municipal Secondary School and Rakhial English Medium School. Together, these institutions have approximately 2,500 students from Gomtipur, Bapunagar, Saraspur and nearby areas.

In January, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) made the controversial decision to divide a campus into two sections by constructing a wall. As a result, secondary and higher secondary schools now operate on one side of the campus. Despite housing around 720 students in the secondary division alone, the entire campus is overseen by just one security guard.

This lack of security has led to frequent incidents of harassment targeting female students. School principals have filed multiple complaints with the local police, but the problem persists. The growing concern among parents has reached a tipping point, prompting many to withdraw their daughters from school.

Local councillors have raised the issue with the municipal commissioner, urging the deployment of additional security personnel to safeguard students and prevent any major incidents.

They stressed the urgency of the matter, with one councillor remarking, “The safety of our children must be prioritised before it is too late.”
