The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Ahmedabad unit has seized two kilograms of ketamine, also known as “date rape” drug, worth Rs 1 crore, which was being shipped to the USA under the guise of spices. The operation, which took place 19 days ago, has led to an ongoing investigation into an international drug syndicate.
The NCB arrested Adnan Furniturewala, originally a resident of Pune, in connection with the drug shipment. During his interrogation, the agency uncovered a link to a Nigerian gang operating out of Delhi, allegedly involved in smuggling ketamine to the USA. The NCB’s investigation into this case is expected to expose a major nationwide drug trafficking network.
On December 3, the NCB Ahmedabad team received specific intelligence about a drug smuggling operation sending parcels of ketamine from various states, including Gujarat. It was reported that the Nigerian gang was using branded spices as a cover to send the drugs overseas. As a result, the NCB set up special surveillance across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and other states, monitoring potential suspects.
Ketamine, a potent drug commonly used as a “date rape” drug, is known to increase sexual urges and is often exploited for illicit purposes. The NCB’s investigation revealed that the drug was being trafficked in large quantities to the United States.
Adnan Furniturewala, who had previously trafficked drugs in the USA, was deported to India after being involved in three criminal cases. Upon his return to India, he continued his drug trafficking activities, expanding his network in Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra. Despite being arrested a year ago, Furniturewala was released on parole and resumed his operations, moving drugs to various locations, including Bengaluru, where he was finally apprehended.
During his questioning, the NCB learned that Furniturewala was working with a Nigerian syndicate. The syndicate members—Emmanuel Ifinani Nwaboria, Alkem Joseph and Emmanuel Ojasa—were responsible for packing the ketamine into branded spice parcels and sending them to the USA. Acting on this information, the NCB arrested the three individuals in Delhi and seized the two kilos of ketamine worth Rs 1 crore.
