A four-year-old boy has tragically died after being struck by a speeding car driven by a 19-year-old man in Mumbai. The incident occurred near Ambedkar College in the Wadala area on Sunday.
Officials have stated that the victim, identified as Ayush Laxman Kinvade, belonged to a family living on the footpath. His father is a labourer.
The driver of the Hyundai Creta, Sandeep Gole, resides in Vile Parle.
The incident happened days after a driver in Mumbai lost control of an electric bus that was part of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) project, which is controlled by the city. The bus crashed into cars and pedestrians, killing seven people and wounding forty-two more.
The incident, which happened in Kurla on December 9 and was seen on CCTV, also damaged over 20 vehicles.
The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways stated last week that Maharashtra is among the states with the highest number of road accidents over the past five years.
Based on information gathered from several states and Union Territories, the report found that over the 2018–2022 period, over 7 lakh individuals died in road accidents across India.
The state with the most road accident deaths (1,08,882) was Uttar Pradesh, followed by Tamil Nadu (84,316) and Maharashtra (66,370).
