Gujarat’s judicial backlog continues to grow, with 1,70,963 cases pending in the High Court and 16,90,643 cases in District and Subordinate Courts.
In response to a question raised by Rajya Sabha member Parimal Nathwani on Thursday, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal provided a detailed overview of pending cases and vacancies in the judiciary across the country.
The report revealed that a total of 82,640 cases are pending in the Supreme Court of India. High Courts across the country have a backlog of 61,80,878 cases, while District and Subordinate Courts face a staggering pendency of 4,62,34,646 cases.
According to the minister, judicial vacancies contribute significantly to these delays. In the Gujarat High Court, 20 judge posts remain vacant out of a sanctioned strength of 52, while District and Subordinate Courts in Gujarat have 535 vacant posts out of a sanctioned strength of 1,720 judges.
The national figures are equally concerning. The Supreme Court of India has one vacancy out of its sanctioned strength of 34 judges. High Courts across the country have 368 vacant posts against a total sanctioned strength of 1,122 judges. District and Subordinate Courts face 5,262 vacancies against a sanctioned strength of 25,741 judges.
