Unregulated drilling of borewells has led to severe water crisis in several districts of Gujarat and high fluoride content has been found in as many as 25 districts, leaving water non-potable.
This has been revealed in the findings presented in the Rajya Sabha by the Central Ground Water Board.
Over-extraction of water has depleted the groundwater levels, leaving many regions without access to potable water. In some areas of North Gujarat, water is not available even after drilling up to 100 feet. Experts have warned that groundwater resources will be exhausted if the usage is not regulated.
The Jal Shakti Ministry said that the Central Groundwater Board collected 632 water samples from various locations in the state out of which 88 were found to be having elevated levels of fluoride.
Reports indicated that fluoride contamination exceeding the permissible limit of 1.5 mg/L was detected in groundwater of 25 districts, including Ahmedabad, Amreli, Anand, Banaskantha, Dahod and Kutch.
These levels are far above the acceptable limits for human consumption, raising concerns over the long-term health implications for the population, experts said.
The consumption of fluoride-laden groundwater has led to a rise in health problems, particularly in rural areas. Affected individuals are experiencing conditions such as joint pain, weakened bones, tooth decay, skin ailments, digestive disorders and hair loss. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable, as the consumption of contaminated water can have harmful effects on maternal and foetal health.
Experts say not much is being done in the state even as the water tables are depleting at alarming levels.
