AIAARO’s Obesity India 2024 Focuses on Millets, Fibre, Healthy Fats for Weight Loss

India is the third most obese country in the world, after the United States and China. Obesity rates in India have increased significantly since COVID-19. Therefore, the All India Association for Advancing Research in Obesity (AIAARO) inaugurated its 17th Annual Conference, “Obesity India 2024,” in Ahmedabad on Friday to discuss obesity, one of the most pressing health challenges in India and globally.

This three-day event, supported by the World Obesity Federation, brought together more than 500 experts, including obesity surgeons, endocrinologists, and nutritionists, to discuss advancements and strategies in combating obesity.

The conference focused on sharing cutting-edge research, exploring innovative treatments and fostering collaboration in the fight against the obesity epidemic.

The conference features diverse topics ranging from dietary strategies to the role of exercise and the use of innovative medical interventions for obesity management. 

Presented by Poonam Vasvani, a renowned nutritionist and dietitian, this session examined the growing popularity of millets as a weight-loss superfood. Vasvani highlighted their high fibre content, low glycaemic index, and nutrient density, which make them effective for managing weight and improving metabolic health. However, she also cautioned against treating millets as a magic bullet, stressing the need for balanced dietary practices.

Professor (Dr) Mini Sheth, an expert in Dietetics and Clinical Nutrition Services, elaborated on the crucial role of dietary fibre in weight management. Dr Sheth emphasised that fibre promotes satiety, regulates blood sugar levels, and improves gut health. She provided insights into optimal fibre-rich foods, such as fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains, that can aid in sustainable weight loss.

Shruti K Bhardwaj, Chief Clinical Nutritionist at Zydus Hospitals, shed light on the significance of healthy fats in a weight-loss diet. Bhardwaj explained how omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, flaxseeds and walnuts help regulate inflammation and metabolism, dispelling myths that all fats contribute to weight gain.

One of the highlights of the day was a lively debate on whether diet or exercise plays a more critical role in weight loss.

Prachi Patel, a dietitian and clinical nutritionist, argued that dietary choices are paramount, claiming that weight loss begins in the kitchen and that calorie intake must be controlled for any exercise to be effective. Speaking to Vibes of India she said, “Diet is more effective for weight loss. Although, exercise is essential for overall health and weight maintenance.”

Gurpreet Kaur Malhotra, a chief bariatric physiotherapist, countered with an equally compelling case for exercise. She said, “ Exercise is an irreplaceable component of long-term weight weight loss. Exercise not only burns calories and creates a calorie deficit, but also helps build and maintain muscle, boost metabolism and regulate hormones that support weight loss.” She also suggested that a structured exercise programme is the key to achieving and maintaining a healthy weight and improving mental health. 

The conference has a significant international dimension, with support from the World Obesity Federation. Experts discussed how global trends in obesity research and treatment can be adapted to meet India’s unique challenges. The country is grappling with a dual burden of malnutrition and obesity, necessitating innovative and culturally tailored solutions.

Dr. Mahendra Narwaria, President of AIAARO and Organising Chairman of the conference, said, “ Through Obesity India 2024, we aim to raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote evidence-based solutions to address this epidemic. We will engage with not just the medical community but also society and policymakers to integrate obesity education into school/medical college curriculums and public health initiatives. The conference will feature renowned speakers, including Gee Hyun Kang, President of the Asia Oceania Association for the Study of Obesity, as the chief guest, and an online keynote address by Philip Scherer, former President of the World Obesity Federation.”

The event also featured the role of technology in weight loss and surgical interventions for severe obesity.
