The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Thursday carried out raids at 19 locations across Assam, Gujarat, Jammu and Kashmir, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh as part of an investigation into the banned group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), suspected of attempting to radicalise individuals and spread terrorist propaganda in the country.
In Gujarat, NIA officials, working alongside the Ahmedabad Rural Police, searched the home of Adil Vepari, a member of an online radical group, in Sanand town. Vepari is reportedly employed at a madarsa in Chekhala village, Banaskantha district.
Meanwhile, in Jammu and Kashmir, raids were conducted in Khansahib in Budgam, Kreeri in Baramulla and the Bamzoo Mattan area of Anantnag.
As raids occurred at the residence of local cleric Mufti Khalid, protests broke out in Jhansi. He tried to assure the gathering that there was nothing to be concerned about and that the NIA team was only doing out its job in accordance with the law.
According to media reports, NIA officials found electronic devices and incriminating papers, such as magazines and pamphlets, during today’s raids. In relation to the case, a number of individuals were also apprehended for interrogation.
The suspects, according to the anti-terror agency, were “encouraging people to carry out violent crimes across India.”
This operation comes after earlier ones in which searches at 26 locations in Assam, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir resulted in the arrest of Sheikh Sultan Salah Uddin Ayubi, also known as Ayubi.
Substantial evidence, including documents, electronic devices, pamphlets and magazines, were discovered during the earlier searches, which also resulted in several detentions for interrogation.
