Former Karnataka CM SM Krishna Passes Away at 92 After Prolonged Illness

| Updated: December 10, 2024 12:41

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna, a prominent statesman and former Chief Minister of Karnataka, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. He died at his residence in Bengaluru after a prolonged illness. Krishna was instrumental in shaping India’s foreign policy during his tenure as External Affairs Minister from 2009 to 2012.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over his death, describing Krishna as a “remarkable leader” admired across various sectors of society. In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter), Modi said, “SM Krishna Ji was a remarkable leader, admired by people from all walks of life. I have had many opportunities to interact with Shri SM Krishna Ji over the years, and I will always cherish those interactions. I am deeply saddened by his passing. My condolences to his family and admirers.”

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah also mourned Krishna’s death, praising his exceptional contributions as both a state and union minister. “Krishna’s service as a State and Union Minister and Chief Minister is unparalleled. Karnataka will always be indebted to him for his contribution to the growth of the IT-BT sector, especially as Chief Minister,” he remarked. Siddaramaiah highlighted Krishna’s disciplined life, gentlemanly demeanour and visionary leadership, describing them as inspirations for aspiring politicians.

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda expressed his condolences on X, recalling their shared political journey in Karnataka. “I am saddened by the passing away of SM Krishna, my friend and longtime Karnataka colleague,” Gowda wrote, reflecting on their distinct approaches to governance despite starting their careers around the same time.

Karnataka’s IT Minister Priyank Kharge also paid tribute, noting Krishna’s lasting legacy in leadership and public service. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri SM Krishna, the former Chief Minister of Karnataka, whose legacy of leadership and public service has left an indelible mark on our state and nation,” Kharge said. He added that Krishna’s life was one of remarkable service to the people.

The Karnataka government has declared three days of mourning in honour of Krishna. During this period, no official functions or celebrations will take place. His last rites will be conducted with full state honours, according to reports.

Krishna served as Karnataka’s Chief Minister from 1999 to 2004, during which he played a pivotal role in transforming Bengaluru into India’s technology capital, earning it the moniker “Silicon Valley of India.” Beyond his role as Chief Minister, he served as the Union Minister for External Affairs and as Governor of Maharashtra between 2004 and 2008.

His political journey began in the 1960s, with his first electoral victory in 1962 as an independent candidate from the Maddur assembly constituency. Krishna later joined the Praja Socialist Party and won the Mandya Lok Sabha seat in 1968. He returned to the Congress in 1971, continuing his distinguished career at both state and national levels. In 2017, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), marking a significant shift in his political affiliations.

Recognising his contributions, Krishna was awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2023. Earlier that year, he announced his decision to step away from active politics.
