A day after apprehending a 42-year-old Vejalpur witchdoctor and YouTuber on suspicion of plotting to kill and embezzle money from a Sanand business person, Sarkhej police has discovered that the man they apprehended is a serial killer who allegedly killed three members of a family in Surendranagar in 2023 and one person in the Ahmedabad city in 2021 out of greed.
Before killing them, he would ask victims to bring money so that it may be multiplied through ceremonies.
Navalsinh Chavda, a native of Wadhwan, was apprehended late on Tuesday night before he could assassinate 29-year-old businessman Abhijeetsinh Rajput, a resident of Param Green Bungalows in Navapura, Sanand. Chavda lived in Akshardham Society, near Vejalpur police station.
Like his earlier victims, Chavda had enticed Rajput with the promise of a tantrik ceremony that would increase his wealth fourfold. According to Sarkhej police inspector R K Dhulia, Chavda, who refers to himself as the “bhuva” of a deity, would prey on friends, relatives, and acquaintances before poisoning his unsuspecting victims. Chavda allegedly tricked Rajput, a distant relative, by promising to quadruple his wealth through a tantric ritual that would take place in Mumatpura. As he had done with the other four victims, Chavda intended to poison Rajput and steal his money.
In 2023, we also learnt that Chavda had murdered three family members: 50-year-old Dipesh Patadia, his 50-year-old wife Parul, and their 19-year-old daughter Utsavi. Their bodies were then disposed of in the Dudhrej canal. An Ahmedabad city police senior officer said that the Surendranagar police had filed an accidental death case in March 2024, assuming it was a mass suicide.
According to the officer, the accused was the source of the family’s most recent call, and the family also knew Chavda. After questioning Chavda, the Surendranagar police put the matter on hold.
According to another senior official, the two previous cases will be reopened. Sections 55 (abetting an offence punishable by death or life imprisonment), 62 (the penalty for attempting to commit acts punishable by life imprisonment or other imprisonments), and 318(1) and (2) (cheating) are the ones under which Sarkhej police has charged Chavda. The Gujarat Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman, Evil, and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act, 2024, is another case against Chavda. A fine of between Rs 5,000 and Rs 50,000 and six months to seven years in prison are the penalties for such an infraction.
After authorities emphasised the necessity for additional investigation into the accused’s alleged occult rituals and potential involvement in human sacrifices, a rural court remanded Chavda to seven days in police detention. White powder and ceremonial objects were among the incriminating evidence found by Sarkhej police in his car.
The court was also shown videos purportedly taken from YouTube showing the accused engaging in occult activities. The police said they needed to reconstruct the crime scene and ascertain whether Chavda performed human sacrifices as part of his rituals in their remand application. They believe there may have been accomplices involved. The defence attorney argued against the remand, claiming that the required evidence had been found and that the accused was assisting the authorities. The court granted the remand because it believed the police investigation was insufficient.
On 23 August 2021, Aslali police discovered a man’s body in Kamod village, which appeared to be the result of a motorbike accident.
Police filed a formal complaint alleging that the deceased, Vivek Gohil, 23, of Nikol, died as a result of careless driving. They also filed a formal complaint against an unidentified driver. It’s interesting to note that the motorbike showed no evidence of damage, and the body was free of injury marks. According to a postmortem examination report, poisoning was the cause of death.
According to authorities, Jigar, Vivek’s brother, accused their close friend Navalsinh Chavda, who had relocated to Ahmedabad around seven months prior, of being involved. Jigar and Chavda formed a cooperation agreement to provide cab services. During the day, Jigar would transport passengers, and at night, Chavda.
According to the police, Chavda told Jigar about his plans to become wealthy quickly, including how he would transport Abhijeetsinh Rajput from Sanand to Mumatpura and kill him in the presence of a tantric ritual. According to authorities, Chavda even offered Jigar a quarter of the money he would obtain following the murder. Chavda was unaware that Jigar had captured the plan on his cell phone.
Chavda would mix a toxic substance with water and give it to his victims.
The victims would either become unconscious, lose control of their abilities, or suffer a deadly heart attack. Jigar went to the police and revealed Chavda’s scheme after he had taken Rajput to a remote location in Mumatpura. Chavda was captured by a Sarkhej police team that raced to the scene.
