The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) legislature party meeting is scheduled to take place at 10 am on December 4 at Maharashtra Vidhan Bhavan, as confirmed by the party’s state unit. During the meeting, the MLAs will elect their leader, who is expected to become Maharashtra’s next chief minister.
A top official stated that the chief minister’s name will be disclosed when the BJP elects its legislative party leader on Wednesday. The announcement would be made a day before the Mahayuti government’s swearing-in ceremony.
Earlier, the BJP appointed former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman as central observers for the Maharashtra legislative party meeting.
“Rupani and Sitharaman would meet the BJP’s elected representatives in Mumbai on Wednesday. Following this meeting, the chosen candidate’s name will be relayed to senior leaders in Delhi. These observers will then announce the elected leader of the BJP, who is set to be the next chief minister,” a BJP leader said.
Notably, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other dignitaries will be present for the swearing-in ceremony of the Mahayuti administration on December 5 evening at Mumbai’s Azad Maidan.
In the Maharashtra assembly elections, the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance won by a wide margin. With 132 seats, the BJP was the single largest party when the results were announced on November 23.
Lok Sabha MP and Maharashtra NCP chief from Raigad, Sunil Tatkare, stated on Sunday that the BJP legislative party leader has not yet been named.
“We will collectively determine whether the chief minister and deputy chief ministers will be the only ones to take the oath or if the ministers will also be sworn in,” he said.
Although the party has not yet formally revealed the candidate’s name, a top BJP leader said that former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has been picked for the position.
The two primary BJP partners in the Mahayuti coalition, the Shiv Sena and the Nationalist Congress Party, have chosen Ajit Pawar and Eknath Shinde as their legislature party leaders.
