Following a 13-day break, the Manipur government announced on Thursday that classes in Jiribam and the Imphal Valley regions’ schools and institutions would resume from November 28.
Since November 16, when the dead bodies of three women and three children in Jiribam were found in the Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam, respectively, educational institutions in these regions have been closed.
According to a directive from the Directorate of Education-Schools, “Normal classes will resume for all schools of the state, government, government aided, private and central schools from November 29.”
A separate directive stated that state universities and other government-aided institutes under the Higher and Technical Education Department will begin classes from Friday.
According to another official, prohibition orders have been in effect in Jiribam and the districts of the Imphal Valley till Thursday. “It is not clear as of now whether curfew will be relaxed from Friday or will continue. No fresh order has been issued so far,” he said.
Over 250 people have been killed and thousands displaced in ethnic violence between the Meiteis from Imphal Valley and the Kuki-Zo groups from the surrounding hills since May last year.
