The Ahmedabad City Police launched a combing operation after a meeting between the top officials and the Gujarat State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi.
The zonal DCPs and a team of 30 to 50 personnel conducted this operation and checked 21,223 vehicles, including 3,111 two-wheelers. This has resulted in the seizure of 199 weapons under the Gujarat Police Act, including Rambo knives, swords and other sharp-edged instruments. In addition to 375 arrests for public intoxication—111 of which occurred in Zone 1, which encompasses the more affluent parts of the city—1,791 automobiles were seized. On the outskirts of the town, the police also checked hotels, dhabas and other lodging establishments.
In addition, 1,266 four-wheeler drivers were fined for violating the Motor Vehicles Act, which includes using unauthorised LED headlights and 58 burglars were caught. A total of Rs 12.82 lakh or 1,390 e-challans, were issued. Thirty-four serious offenders, including parole violators, were arrested after inspecting 183 rental properties and 57 essential installations, according to Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch) Sharad Singhal. “Surprise checks like this will become commonplace,” he said.
Two recent killings—the stabbing of a young person in Kagdapith and the fatal shooting of a vegetable vendor in Nehrunagar by hired killers—were the impetus for the operation. Two police inspectors were suspended as a result of these instances.
