In India, chai is more than just a drink; it is a cultural cornerstone, shared during daily routines and social gatherings. But how far can one go for a luxurious cup of tea? While a cup of chai at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Palace Hotel costs around Rs 650–750, a café in Dubai has taken indulgence to new heights with a gold-infused version priced at a staggering Rs 1 lakh.
Boho Café, located in the Emirates Financial Towers in Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), is owned by Indian-origin restaurateur Sucheta Sharma. The café’s extravagant Gold Karak tea has been making waves on social media for its opulent presentation.
Served with a 24-carat gold leaf, the tea comes in pure silver cutlery, accompanied by a gold-dusted croissant. Customers can even keep the silverware as a memento.
A viral video by a food vlogger showcases the café and its signature Gold Karak tea. The video reveals the tea’s lavish presentation, featuring gold dust, a decorative gold leaf, and a silver tray. The caption accompanying the video read: “Experience luxury in a cup with the world’s most extravagant karak, served in pure silver and topped with 24-carat gold. Each sip comes with a side of gold-dusted croissant—and the silverware is yours to keep!”
The video has sparked heated discussions online. While some users marvelled at the idea of such a luxurious experience, others criticised the concept as wasteful.
One commenter quipped, “Crazy how you can get a 1 AED karak that might even taste better!” Another remarked, “Gold or not, it will all end up flushed down the toilet.”
A third user joked about the price, saying, “Never thought I’d need an EMI to drink chai!” Others criticised the excess, with one commenting, “Ridiculous. People paying for this clearly don’t value their money.”
While opinions are divided, the Gold Karak tea highlights a fusion of tradition and luxury, blending the humble origins of karak chai with an opulent twist. Whether a testament to indulgence or an example of extravagance, it’s certainly a conversation starter.
The question remains: how far would you go for a cup of tea?
