Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman and his wife, Saira Banu, have announced their separation after 29 years of marriage. The couple, who wed in 1995, confirmed the news on 20 November, with Rahman sharing an emotional note on social media, thanking supporters for respecting their privacy during this difficult time.

In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), the Raavan composer described the decision as “shattering” and expressed sorrow at not reaching the milestone of 30 years together. “We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter,” he wrote.

The announcement came hours after a statement from Saira Banu’s lawyer, Vandana Shah, was released on 19 November. It outlined the challenges the couple had faced, leading to their decision to part ways.

The statement read: “After many years of marriage, Mrs Saira has made the difficult decision to separate from her husband, Mr AR Rahman. This decision comes after significant emotional strain in their relationship. Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time. Mrs Saira emphasised that she has taken this decision out of pain and agony. Mrs Saira requests privacy and understanding from the public during this challenging time, as she navigates this difficult chapter in her life.”

Saira Banu, born on 20 December 1973 in Kutch, Gujarat, comes from a culturally rich and traditional family. Known for her philanthropic efforts, she has supported numerous initiatives alongside Rahman, focusing on education, healthcare and community development.

Despite their high-profile status, Rahman and Banu have always maintained a private personal life, rarely sharing details about their family. Together, they have three children: Khatija, Raheema and Ameen.

The couple’s marriage, which began in Chennai in 1995, had been a partnership of shared values and mutual support. Their decision to separate has come as a surprise to many, with fans and colleagues expressing their sympathy and respect for their request for privacy.
