Brazilian authorities have detained five officers accused of being involved in a plot to overthrow the government and assassinate President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after the 2022 elections.
Investigation findings showed that the plotters also planned to attack Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court and Vice President Geraldo Alckmin.
Four military personnel and one police officer are among the five people who were taken into custody.
The authorities issued five arrest warrants, three search and seizure warrants and imposed further measures, including confiscating passports and limiting the suspects’ communication.
“The police investigation uncovered a plot involving military personnel trained in the Army’s Special Forces and a retired high-ranking official,” said Judge Alexandre de Moraes, who ordered the arrests.
The judge stressed that the goal was to obstruct the inauguration of the duly elected administration and to challenge democratic values and the judiciary’s authority in Brazil.
These acts, which culminated in November and December of 2022, were a part of a larger coup d’tat plot.
