Gujarat: Seven Hospitals, Four Doctors Suspended from PM-JAY Scheme After Khyati Incident

| Updated: November 19, 2024 14:13

Seven hospitals in the state have been removed from the list of facilities authorised to provide healthcare services under Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY). Of these, three are in Ahmedabad, with one each in Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot and Gir Somnath.

The move comes after two beneficiaries of the PM-JAY died following angioplasty at Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad on November 11.

The following hospitals have been suspended: Sunshine Global Hospitals in Vadodara and Surat; Jivan Jyot Hospital in Gir Somnath; Nihit Baby Care Children Hospital in Rajkot; and Naritva Hospital, Shiv Hospital and Khyati Multispecialty Hospital in Ahmedabad.

Furthermore, specialist doctors such as paediatrician Dr Hiren Mashru, radiation oncologist Dr Ketan Kalariya, surgical oncologist Dr Mihir Shah and cardiologist Dr Prashant Vazirani have also been suspended.

Two Doctors Already on Radar

Of the above-mentioned doctors, Dr Vazirani and Dr Mashru have already been associated with high-profile fraud cases.

Dr Vazirani, a cardiologist associated with Khyati Hospital, has been arrested and placed under seven-day remand. Following his arrest, he was transferred to the Crime Branch. On Monday, the city Police Commissioner GS Malik ordered the transfer of the Khyati case to the Crime Branch.

Dr Prashant Vazirani

Over the course of four years, Dr Vazirani conducted 7,000 surgeries, including 221 angiographies and angioplasties in 42 days. He performed 166 surgeries in October and 55 in November. Under the Ayushman Bharat initiative, they were billed.

Whereas, Dr Mashru, a paediatrician from Rajkot, was suspended by the Gujarat Medical Council on October 4 from practising medicine for one year.

Dr Hiren Mashru

The action was taken in response to claims that he had fabricated medical records in order to illegally admit newborns to his facility and get national health system benefits.

Dr Mashru’s healthcare facility, Nihit Babycare Children Hospital, was also removed from the PM-JAY panel and fined Rs 6.54 crore as a result of the action taken against him.
