A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councilor from Anand municipality, Dilip Prajapati alias Dipubhai, was booked in an alleged rape case on Sunday after being reportedly caught in the act by the 35-year-old victim’s husband. Prajapati was suspended from primary membership of the party on Sunday, following the police complaint.
According to police, the alleged incident occurred late on Saturday night when Prajapati reportedly entered the woman’s home in Anand while her husband and children were out. The woman filed an FIR at the Anand Town police station, accusing Prajapati of sexually assaulting her multiple times since June. The woman claimed that Prajapati initially visited her home under the pretext of verifying voter ID details, later obtaining her mobile number and subsequently pursuing her. She also alleged that Prajapati had threatened to share a recorded conversation between them with her husband, which she claims was followed by sexual assault.
On the night of the alleged incident, Prajapati is said to have called the woman and demanded sexual favours before entering the house. The victim’s husband returned home to find the corporator allegedly in the act, leading to a confrontation with Prajapati’s supporters. CCTV footage of the brawl between the two parties has been released, although authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the clash.
Following the lodging of the FIR, the Anand district unit of the BJP suspended Prajapati from all party duties. BJP’s District President Rajesh Patel issued a letter to Prajapati, stating that the serious allegations were damaging to the party’s reputation and violated party principles. He confirmed that, following instructions from the state BJP President, Prajapati had been suspended with immediate effect from the party’s primary membership.
Anand Superintendent of Police, GG Jasani, confirmed that the investigation is ongoing and further legal proceedings are expected to follow. The BJP’s prompt action in suspending Prajapati reflects the gravity with which the party views the allegations, emphasising the violation of both legal and disciplinary standards.
