US President-elect Donald Trump has announced the appointment of Karoline Leavitt as White House Press Secretary in his upcoming administration, set to begin in January. At 27, Leavitt will become the youngest person in US history to hold this role, surpassing Ronald Ziegler, who was 29 when he assumed the position under President Richard Nixon in 1969.
In his announcement on Friday, Trump praised Leavitt for her contributions during his campaign, describing her as a “smart” and “highly effective communicator.”
“Karoline Leavitt did a phenomenal job as the National Press Secretary on my historic campaign, and I am pleased to announce she will serve as White House Press Secretary,” Trump said. “Karoline is smart, tough, and has proven to be a highly effective communicator. I have the utmost confidence she will excel at the podium and help deliver our message to the American people as we make America great again.”
Who Is Karoline Leavitt?
Leavitt, a New Hampshire native, has built her career on her communication skills and unwavering loyalty to Trump. Her political journey began with a summer internship in the White House Office of Presidential Correspondence during her university studies. After graduating, she joined the White House Press Office as Assistant Press Secretary under Kayleigh McEnany during Trump’s first term.
Following Trump’s 2020 election loss, Leavitt served as Communications Director for Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, a Trump ally. In 2022, she contested the New Hampshire House seat, winning the Republican primary but losing the general election to Democrat Chris Pappas. She later rejoined Trump’s team as his campaign spokesperson, where she played a pivotal role in shaping the messaging for his 2024 presidential bid.
Leavitt will face the demanding task of managing the White House’s relationship with the media while maintaining credibility and transparency. The role of press secretary requires balancing the need to inform the public with protecting the confidence of the President. Trump’s first administration saw four press secretaries, including Sean Spicer, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Stephanie Grisham and Kayleigh McEnany.
