‘Govt Did Not Act’: Oppn Slams BJP Over Deaths at Khyati Hospital in Ahmedabad

| Updated: November 13, 2024 13:18

Opposition parties have voiced strong objections following the deaths of two patients who underwent angioplasty at Khyati Multispeciality Hospital in Ahmedabad, with Congress and AAP accusing the BJP-ruled state government of negligence.

On Tuesday, family members and people stormed into the hospital, alleging that “doctors did not take any consent from the family members before performing angiography and angioplasty surgeries on them.”

The Gujarat government had ordered an investigation shortly after the incident. The two patients were covered under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) scheme.

Taking to X (formally Twitter), State Health Minister Rushikesh Patel said, “The alleged incident at Khyati Hospital is very serious. I have ordered an immediate inquiry by the state anti-fraud unit (SAFU) of PM-JAY. If there is any substance in the allegations or evidence of medical negligence, severe action will be taken against the hospital and the doctors involved.”

The AAP’s Gujarat North Zone working president, Ramesh Patel, called for strict punishment for the deaths and said that while holding medical camps is prohibited by the PM-JAY, the hospital did so.

State Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil linked the deaths to government neglect, claiming that the government did not take any action against the same hospital where a patient had died in 2022 after a stent was placed in his body.

“Without informing family members, angiography was conducted on 19 people, of whom seven underwent angioplasty. Khyati Multispecialty Hospital has indulged in fraudulent practices involving government schemes earlier as well. In 2022, one patient died after a stent was placed in his body. The government did not act strictly then, or else this incident could have been prevented,” Gohil said.

After meeting the family members of victims, former deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, a former Mehsana district MLA representing Kadi taluka, claimed that the procedures appeared to have been rushed.

“It appears as if these (angioplasty procedures) were done in haste. It has not been established if the patients even required angioplasty. Getting 11 patients from a single village at a time, getting angiography of all done and conducting angioplasty procedures appear to be excessive action,” he told reporters.

Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, Amit Chavda, pointed out medical malpractices by saying, “Medical mafia are having a free run in the state under the guise of social service. This is happening repeatedly because these medical mafia have the support of the state government. Strict action must be taken against those in charge of the hospital management.”

Vadgam MLA and State Congress working president Jignesh Mevani claimed that similar incidents have taken place at the same hospital in 2022, 2023 and 2024.

The hospital is a healthcare arm of Khyati Group, owned by Kartik Patel. Sources told Vibes of India that he is not in Ahmedabad or possibly not even in the country.

Kartik Patel

Vibes of India asked for a comment on the incident from Kartik Patel and the Group; however, received no response.
