Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud received a ceremonial farewell in the Supreme Court on Friday as he retired from judicial service. The event, live-streamed from the Ceremonial Bench, saw a gathering of notable lawyers, including Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal, who paid tribute to Justice Chandrachud’s contributions to the judiciary. In his parting words, the CJI expressed gratitude and sought forgiveness “if I ever hurt anyone.”
Reflecting on his early days, Justice Chandrachud shared personal memories, describing himself and his colleagues as “pilgrims” devoted to the Court’s legacy. “When I was young, I would come to this court and observe it, and these two portraits in the Court,” he recalled. Reflecting on his retirement, he added, “We are here as pilgrims, birds for a short passage of time, do our work, and leave….”
Justice Chandrachud, aware of his successor’s capability, praised Justice Khanna as “stable, solid, and so dignified,” recognising his understanding of the Court’s historical legacy and the significance of continuity within the institution.
Emphasising his commitment to the role, the CJI remarked that he had wanted to hear as many cases as possible up until the Ceremonial Bench would conclude his judicial tenure. “When my court staff asked me yesterday as to what time the Ceremonial Bench shall be listed, I told them I’ll do as many matters as I can. I wouldn’t want to miss the opportunity to do justice till the last time possible,” he said.
During his farewell, Justice Chandrachud expressed his deep appreciation for the support of the Court and its community, saying, “It is this court which keeps me going … I conclude by thanking all of you and each one of you. I learned so much about life today, and there is no case similar to an earlier case. If I ever hurt anyone in the court, please forgive me.”
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also extended his respects, praising the CJI’s “complete impartiality” in delivering justice. “We have always felt pleasure appearing before you. Your unmatched scholarship and complete impartiality in the dispensation of justice made us feel assured,” Mehta remarked, adding, “May I take the liberty of saying that DYC would really be missed.”
Senior lawyer and Congress leader Kapil Sibal lauded Justice Chandrachud for his patience, calling him “a man of limitless patience.” Sibal also commended him as the “ever-smiling Justice Chandrachud.” Abhishek Manu Singhvi, likewise, praised the CJI’s poise, adding a touch of humour, saying, “Everybody complains that you continue to look the youngest. And, unfortunately, your youthful looks make us feel the oldest. So you must tell the secret behind it.”
