A 70-year-old man from Gandhinagar contracted a Zika virus infection, after which he was treated and discharged from the hospital.
According to a statement from the Gujarat Health Department on Thursday, the man was discharged from the hospital a week ago after fully recovering, even though the report confirming the Zika virus infection was received four days ago.
Aedes mosquitoes are the main vectors of the Zika virus. Rashes, fever, conjunctivitis, joint and muscular pain are some of the symptoms. Zika infection during pregnancy can result in preterm birth, miscarriage and congenital problems, including microcephaly.
The man was admitted to a hospital in Gandhinagar with symptoms of a cold, fever and joint pain. He was subsequently taken to a private hospital in Ahmedabad, where medical professionals submitted samples of his body fluids to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune as they suspected a Zika infection.
After receiving treatment, the patient recovered and was discharged about a week ago. The statement added that he had not recently travelled abroad. A report from NIV received nearly four days ago confirmed the Zika infection.
As a precaution, health officials visited the man’s locality and conducted surveillance as well as monitoring activities. No one in the area displayed symptoms of Zika and samples from his family members tested negative.
