Shahrukh Khan Receives Death Threat, Mumbai Police Launch Probe

| Updated: November 7, 2024 18:10

Bollywood icon Shahrukh Khan has received a death threat accompanied by a demand for Rs 50 lakh, according to Mumbai police. An extortion case has been filed and police investigations are currently underway.

Authorities have traced the origin of the threatening call to a phone number registered in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, leading Mumbai police to summon a Raipur-based lawyer linked to the number. The lawyer informed the police that he had reported his phone missing last week, according to a senior police official in Raipur.

The threat against Shahrukh Khan comes in the wake of recent threats targeting fellow actor Salman Khan, allegedly issued by the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. The Bandra police station in Mumbai received the call directed at Shahrukh Khan, which included a demand for Rs 50 lakh.

No arrests have been made thus far, confirmed a senior police official. A case has been registered by Bandra police under sections 308(4) (extortion involving death threats or grievous injury) and 351(3)(4) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against the unknown caller. Police teams have been deployed across multiple locations to advance the investigation.

While Mumbai police have not confirmed reports suggesting the call originated in Chhattisgarh, Raipur police reported that a notice was issued to a man in the city on Thursday in connection with the case.

As part of their investigation, Mumbai police officials travelled to Raipur and summoned a local resident, identified as Faizan Khan, a lawyer residing in the Pandri area, Raipur’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Santosh Singh, told PTI. Previously, he had been identified as Faiyaz Khan.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the phone number used to make the call is registered under Faizan’s name. He has been asked to appear at Bandra police station for further questioning, Singh stated.

Mumbai police officers arrived at Pandri police station early on Thursday to brief Raipur officials on the matter. Faizan was subsequently called in for questioning, according to City Superintendent of Police (Civil Lines), Ajay Kumar. Faizan informed authorities that he had filed a report regarding his lost phone last week at Khamardih police station. Mumbai police have now issued him a notice, summoning him for further inquiries, the official added.
