Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United States President-elect Donald Trump have reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties across various sectors, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
The MEA’s statement, released on Thursday, summarised a recent phone conversation between Modi and Trump. In the exchange, Prime Minister Modi praised Trump’s “spectacular and resounding victory” in the US presidential election, which he described as reflecting the American public’s “deep trust” in Trump’s leadership and vision.
Modi extended warm congratulations to Trump on his “re-election as the President of the United States of America” and acknowledged the Republican Party’s success in the Congressional elections. Both leaders pledged to strengthen collaborative efforts across sectors such as technology, defence, energy, and space, amongst others.
Modi had posted on social media platform X on Wednesday night, describing his conversation with Trump as a “great discussion” with his “friend.”
The MEA’s statement highlighted that both leaders reaffirmed the importance of the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership, emphasising its value for the people of both nations and for global peace and stability.
Reflecting on past engagements, Prime Minister Modi recalled key moments from Trump’s first term, including the well-received “Howdy Modi” event in Houston in September 2019 and the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad during Trump’s 2020 visit to India.
Trump, 78, won the US presidential election to become the 47th President of the United States, defeating his Democratic rival Kamala Harris. This marks Trump’s second term in office, following his initial victory in the 2016 election when he served as the 45th President.
