Parliament’s Winter Session to Begin on Nov 25, Conclude on Dec 20

Union Minister Kiren Rijiju announced on Tuesday that Parliament’s winter session will commence on November 25 and end on December 20.

“On the recommendation of the Government of India, the Hon’ble President has approved the proposal to summon both Houses of Parliament for the Winter Session 2024 from November 25 to December 20, subject to parliamentary business,” Rijiju shared in a post on X. He added that Constitution Day on November 26 will mark the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution, celebrated in the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan.

The Modi government is expected to focus on passing the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, with a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) currently holding meetings across states with various stakeholders to address concerns and build consensus.

The government may also introduce a bill on ‘One Nation, One Election’. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke on this initiative, stating that simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies would streamline resources and boost India’s development goals. “We are now working towards One Nation, One Election, which will strengthen India’s democracy,” he said.

However, opposition leader Mallikarjun Kharge dismissed the proposal as “impossible,” emphasising that Parliament would need widespread consensus for such a fundamental change. “What PM Modi has said, he will not do it, because when it comes to Parliament, he has to take everybody into confidence,” Kharge stated.

Additionally, the results of the Jharkhand and Maharashtra Assembly elections, expected on 23 November, are likely to be discussed during the session.
