Amid international condemnation over escalating attacks on minorities in Bangladesh following the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, US Presidential candidate Donald Trump has voiced strong opposition to the violence. Describing Bangladesh as being in “a total state of chaos,” the former American president issued a statement on X on Friday night, expressing solidarity with Hindus, Christians and other affected communities as they mark Diwali.
“I strongly condemn the barbaric violence against Hindus, Christians and other minorities who are getting attacked and looted by mobs in Bangladesh, which remains in a total state of chaos,” Trump wrote.
He also criticised the current US administration, saying, “It would have never happened on my watch. Kamala and Joe have ignored Hindus across the world and in America. They have been a disaster from Israel to Ukraine to our own Southern Border, but we will Make America Strong Again and bring back Peace through Strength!”
Trump further vowed to protect Hindu Americans, alleging that they face an “anti-religion agenda of the radical left,” and promised to uphold freedom for all communities. “We will fight for your freedom. Under my administration, we will also strengthen our great partnership with India and my good friend, Prime Minister Modi,” he added.
In an appeal to American voters, Trump also criticised Vice President Kamala Harris, warning that her policies would harm small businesses through “more regulations and higher taxes.” Contrasting his previous administration with the current one, he wrote, “I cut taxes, cut regulations, unleashed American energy and built the greatest economy in history. We will do it again, bigger and better than ever before—and we will Make America Great Again.”
The recent wave of attacks on Hindu temples and properties of minorities in Bangladesh has drawn criticism from India as well. Last month, India condemned the incidents, calling them “deplorable” and urging the Bangladeshi government to ensure the protection and security of all minority groups.
Reports suggest that since the fall of Hasina’s government in August, over 200 attacks on Hindu community members have been recorded across 52 districts. In response, the Bangladeshi interim government established a hotline, encouraging citizens to report any attacks on temples, churches or other religious institutions associated with minority groups.
