A18-year-old Malav Shah from Ahmedabad has defied physical challenges to excel in the Chartered Accountancy (CA) Foundation exam, achieving an impressive score of 328 out of 400 in the assessment conducted in September. The CA Foundation and Intermediate results, released on Wednesday, brought recognition to Malav’s perseverance and intellect.
Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of six, Malav has lived with the progressive muscle-weakening condition, which affects muscle and limb strength, resulting in stiffness and making even basic tasks, such as walking and writing, difficult. Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases known for the degeneration of skeletal muscles, which gradually limits physical mobility.
Malav’s family, a circle of medical professionals, has been an unwavering source of support. His father, Dr Gopal Shah, is a well-known neurosurgeon in Ahmedabad, while his mother, Dr Rupal Shah, is a physiotherapist. Malav’s sister, Helly, currently studies graphic design in the United States.
“Malav was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at the age of six,” Dr Rupal Shah spoke to a section of media. “His muscles lack grip and strength, and he relies on a wheelchair for movement. But while his body may have weakened, his mind has remained resilient. Malav has never shown any weakness in spirit and has bravely faced the challenges of daily life without complaint.”
A former student of Zebar School for Children, a CBSE-affiliated institution in Thaltej, Malav excelled academically, securing 96% in his Class 12 commerce exams before enrolling in a BCom programme at GLS University. His interest in finance and accounting led him to pursue Chartered Accountancy.
“We realised that despite his physical limitations, his intellect is sharp and his passion for finance is strong,” Dr Rupal noted. “Malav’s counsellor encouraged him to pursue chartered accounting. Since he couldn’t attend coaching classes, he relied on online classes and dedicated himself to studying independently. His hard work and focus have paid off brilliantly.”
Dr Gopal Shah remarked on his son’s positive approach to life, saying that Malav’s optimism has been a source of strength for the entire family.
