The family of Renukaswamy, who was allegedly killed by renowned actor Darshan Thoogudeepa and others, declined to comment on Wednesday regarding the Karnataka High Court’s decision to grant the actor interim bail on medical grounds.
However, they expressed confidence that justice would be served, as they have faith in both the judiciary and the police. The court granted interim bail to Darshan, an accused in the Renukaswamy murder case, for a six-week term so that he could have spine surgery.
Speaking with reporters, Renukaswamy’s father Kashinath Shivanagoudar said, “Bail has been granted under the legal system; we cannot comment on it. We have faith that the guilty will be punished. We have faith in law and the police. (Darshan’s) treatment is a matter for the doctor, him and the court; we don’t want to comment on it.”
Sahana, the wife of Renukaswamy, gave birth to a baby boy on October 16. She was five months pregnant when her husband was killed.
Darshan was arrested on June 11 and is currently held in Ballari prison. His friend Pavithra Gowda, along with 15 others, are co-accused in the case. Pavithra is detained in Bengaluru prison, while the others are held in various jails across the state; some of them have recently been granted bail.
“We don’t have anything to say other than that the guilty should be punished. We have faith in law and judiciary, so we are confident that the guilty will be punished,” the father added.
Police report that 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, had sent obscene messages to his friend Pavithra, which allegedly angered Darshan and led to the murder.
His body was discovered near a stormwater drain beside an apartment in Sumanahalli here on June 9. Raghavendra, one of the accused and a member of Darshan’s fan club in Chitradurga, had brought Renukaswamy to a shed in R R Nagar, Bengaluru, under the pretence that the actor wished to meet him.
He is said to have been tortured and killed in this shed. The post-mortem report states that Renukaswamy, a Chitradurga native, died due to shock and haemorrhage after suffering several serious injuries.
According to police, the investigation has shown that Pavithra, the main accused, was the “major cause” of Renukaswamy’s murder. She allegedly incited other accused, worked with them and took part in the crime.
