Gujarat: Cong Demands Rs 10,000 Crore Relief Package for Farmers as Heavy Rains Devastate Crops

| Updated: October 22, 2024 20:34

This year, relentless rainfall has devastated large parts of Gujarat, particularly the Saurashtra region, with widespread crop destruction leaving farmers in severe distress. Most areas have suffered significant agricultural losses, and many farmers are facing the complete loss of their harvests due to the unrelenting downpours in the Monsoon season.

Congress has responded by making an aggressive plea to the government, demanding a relief package of nearly Rs 10,000 crore and calling the BJP-ruled state government to declare a ‘green drought’.

Congress leader Lalit Kagathara stated that the farmers’ situation is dire, with expensive seeds and medicines ruined by the excessive rain.

He compared the farmers’ losses to the grief of losing a young family member, emphasising the emotional and financial toll this has taken on the farmers.

“So far, the government has provided no assistance, which has led to the demand for immediate relief. If the government fails to respond, Congress will begin protests, starting on October 25,” he told Vibes of India

Congress leader Lalit Vasoya has announced plans to gather over 100,000 farmers to raise their concerns with the government. He stressed that the protests would intensify if the government does not provide adequate support.

MLA Kirit Patel criticised the government for failing to prioritise the needs of farmers.

He accused the administration of favouring industrial interests while neglecting the agricultural sector. While speaking with Vibes of India, he highlighted an 11 per cent increase in farmer suicides and alleged a worsening situation under BJP rule.

He claimed the government’s policies have done little to alleviate the suffering of farmers, accusing them of conducting inappropriate surveys without offering real solutions.
