The organisers of the 2024 MAMI Mumbai Film Festival have announced that veteran actor Shabana Azmi will receive the ‘Excellence in Cinema Award’ in recognition of her remarkable 50-year career.

On October 18, Azmi will receive the award from the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), which hosts the annual film gala, according to a press release.

The National Award-winning actor Vidya Balan will lead a masterclass on October 19 and provide insights on Azmi’s experiences and journey over five decades in the industry.

Azmi, who is well-known for her outstanding contributions to both mainstream and cinema, began her career with highly acclaimed films such as Ankur (1974) directed by Shyam Benegal. Other films in her career include Godmother, Earth and Fire, Arth, Swami, Sparsh, Mandi, Masoom, and Ek Din Achanak.

Festival Director Shivendra Singh Dungarpur said it is a privilege to honour a renowned actor like Azmi. “MAMI had the distinct pleasure of honouring her in 1999 for her remarkable contributions over 25 years, and we are fortunate to continue witnessing her work and celebrate her golden jubilee,” Dungarpur said.

The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024 is scheduled to take place from October 19 to October 24. The six-day event is described as a celebration of global cinema, community, creativity, and culture. More than 110 films from all genres, both features and non-features, will be screened in more than 50 languages from across the world.
