The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday issued a notice to the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) in response to a plea filed by a student whose admission to the prestigious two-year post-graduate programme was cancelled on technical grounds, despite completing three-quarters of the course.
Justice Aniruddha P Mayee, who presided over the case, has directed IIMA, along with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, to respond by 21 October. The petition was brought forward by R Shri Vignesh, who had enrolled in the IIMA programme after completing his five-year integrated BTech and MTech course at IIT Madras in 2021. His admission to IIMA was revoked in September 2023 due to delays in receiving his degree certificates and mark sheets from IIT Madras.
Vignesh explained in his petition that he began the integrated course at IIT Madras in 2016, completing it in June 2021. In May 2022, he secured admission to IIMA after achieving an impressive 98.66 percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT). However, complications arose when IIT Madras failed to provide him with his degree certificates and mark sheets in a timely manner due to administrative and procedural delays. Despite having successfully completed four trimesters of the programme at IIMA, his admission was ultimately cancelled in September 2023 for non-submission of the required documents.
Vignesh’s counsel argued that his client had made repeated efforts to obtain the necessary documentation from IIT Madras. Upon finally receiving the documents in July 2024, Vignesh approached IIMA to seek readmission. The lawyer further contended that Vignesh was not at fault for the delay and it was unfair to hold him responsible for the administrative lapses of his former institution.
