National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah expressed his delight that the people supported the National Congress win with their votes on Tuesday, considering that the latest developments in the Jammu Kashmir Assembly vote counting indicate the National Conference-Congress alliance winning more than half the seats.
He defeated Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi of the PDP by a margin of more than 18,000 votes to win the Budgam seat. While the PDP and BJP fought the polls separately, the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference and Congress, partners in the INDIA group, together contested the assembly elections.
“We should wait for the final results to come. Only after that, we can say something. As of now, I am really happy that NC has got victory and we are thankful to the voters. People have supported us more than we expected. It will now be our efforts to prove that we are worth these votes,” Abdullah said.
Additionally, he stated that for the last five years, rivals had made efforts to end the National Conference party.
“Efforts were being made by other political parties to completely finish the National Conference party since the last five years. However, those who tried to finish us have lost themselves today,” he alleged.
Farooq’s Reaction
As the National Conference appeared to be headed towards victory in the Union Territory alongside ally Congress, Omar Abdullah’s father, Farooq Abdullah, said that his son would become the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir.
“Omar Abdullah will be the chief minister,” the senior Abdullah said. He added that the verdict demonstrated the disapproval of the J-K population to the removal of Article 370.
“The people have given their verdict and proven that the decisions taken on August 5, 2019, are not acceptable to them,” he said. “I am thankful to everyone that the people participated in the polls and did so freely. I am grateful to God for the results.”
