The first wins in the Jammu and Kashmir elections have been declared, with Nazir Ahmed Khan of the National Conference (NC) securing victory in Gurez, whilst the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Darshan Kumar claimed the Basohli constituency.
Ahead of the results, National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah cautioned the BJP against any attempts to undermine the democratic process if the outcome did not favour them. He expressed confidence in the success of the NC-Congress alliance in these elections.
“We are hopeful of winning. The voters of Jammu and Kashmir have made their decision, and we will know the outcome by this afternoon,” Abdullah told reporters.
He emphasised the need for transparency in the electoral process, saying, “If the people’s mandate goes against the BJP, they should not resort to any underhand tactics.” Abdullah also highlighted that the NC had formed an alliance with Congress to strengthen their chances of victory.
Jammu and Kashmir is holding elections for the first time in a decade, but Abdullah remarked that it was still too early to determine whether they would require the support of other parties, such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
