Veteran Actor Mithun Chakraborty To Be Honoured With Dadasaheb Phalke Award

| Updated: September 30, 2024 13:17

The 74-year-old veteran Bollywood actor Mithun Chakraborty will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

Information & Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared the news on X (formally Twitter).

“Mithun Da’s remarkable cinematic journey inspires generations! Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to award legendary actor, Sh. Mithun Chakraborty Ji for his iconic contribution to Indian Cinema,” he stated.

The actor was also congratulated and praised by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Delighted that Shri Mithun Chakraborty Ji has been conferred the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, recognising his unparalleled contributions to Indian cinema. He is a cultural icon, admired across generations for his versatile performances. Congratulations and best wishes to him,” he said in a post.

Mithun received the esteemed Padma Bhushan Award earlier this year. The actor made his film debut in the play Mrigayaa, which won a National Award in 1976 and was directed by Mrinal Sen. Following the film’s success, he was honoured with his first National Film Award for Best Actor.

Disco Dancer, Dance Dance, Pyar Jhukta Nahin, Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki, and Commando were among the hits that solidified his 1980s ascent to fame, as was the 1979 spy thriller Surakshaa. In just ten years, Mithun broke the record by starring in over 100 films. Fans began to refer to him as “Disco Dancer” because of his dance performance on songs like “I Am a Disco Dancer” and “Jimmy Jimmy.”

The renowned actor, who has won three National Awards, effectively handled his career between Bengali and Bollywood films before making his television debut in the late 2000s. He served as a judge on Dance India Dance, a dance reality show.

Bestseller, a psychological thriller series on Prime Video, marked Mithun Chakraborty’s debut in the realm of OTT.
