A few days after a 24-year-old MBA student was found dead in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA), the police stated that, on the face of it, they have not found any evidence indicating that there was any instance of abetment to suicide.
This occurred a day after Telangana-born Akshith Bhukya’s father filed a police complaint, urging officials to investigate claims that the student had been pressured and forced by an institute administrative staff member over an upcoming symposium.
However, police said that they were yet to find any proof to back the claims. A police officer noted, “This case still remains an accidental death one.”
Bhukya was in charge of the coordination committee for The Red Brick Summit (TRBS), the annual management symposium held by IIMA, according to investigating officer RL Patel.
“The company was going to hold an advance event as part of the deal. However, this company allegedly used an IIMA logo in their promotional material and uploaded it on social media platforms. This is said to have rankled senior officials at the premier institute,” an officer said.
The IIMA logo was not authorised by the company, according to the police officer, who revealed that one of the administrative staff members informed a fellow coordination committee member. The officer also stated that they were asked to remove it from social media and postpone the event.
“The firm deleted the posts and the event was cancelled. The entire controversy had ended by September 20. Later on, this staffer texted a member of the coordination committee that they should be more careful in the future, especially regarding the use of the IIMA logo by third parties,” the police officer revealed.
Police said that they had spoken with students on this committee, who stated that they had planned the activities till 11:45 p.m. on September 25 and that they had spoken with Bhukya till 10:30 a.m. on the same day. That evening, at 3:45 p.m., his body was found.
The TRBS organisers informed on Friday via a Facebook post that the event, which was supposed to begin on that day, has been cancelled.
