In Enrolment Spree, BJP Devises Weird ‘Membership Drive’ In Gujarat

| Updated: September 19, 2024 11:56

First school children and their parents then MGNREGA officers and now a patient. The list appears to be increasing in all the wrong way as far as the BJP’s membership enrollment drive in Gujarat is concerned.

A patient, who went to civil hospital in Visnagar to get an injection, was asked to share an OTP that he had received on his mobile. The moment he shared the OTP, he got a message that he was enrolled as a BJP member. On which date the patient went to get an injection is not known.

A video has gone viral in Gujarat on Wednesday wherein a person (apparently a patient and not seen in the video) is heard asking the hospital staff why the OTP was asked for. The staff apologises saying it was by mistake. The patient then asks the Resident Medical Officer as to why this happened. The RMO then reprimands the employee.

More than 10 days ago, two schools of Surendranagar were on the radar. The schools had asked the students to get mobile phones to school and thereafter their parents were reportedly enrolled as BJP members. In a reply to a notice served by the District Education Officer, one school said that the students were asked to get the mobiles to help link ration cards with Aadhaar cards. The School also said that the students might have used the link on their own to check how parents can join the party.

Thereafter, Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Dediapada Chaitar Vasava had alleged that few MGNREGA officers from the region were enrolled as BJP members. He also alleged that officers were being given targets to enroll members.

More than a fortnight ago, launching the membership drive in Gujarat, Union Jal Shakti Minister and state BJP president C R Paatil had set a target of enrolling 2 crore members. Last, the BJP had 1.19 crore members.

However, in the last Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had managed only 1.88 crore votes.

So the question remains that if the party had 1.19 crore members then how could it get only 69 lakh more votes.

Opposition Congress also has been critical of these types of instances that have come to light to enroll citizens as BJP members.
