In a startling development from Navsari district in Gujarat, a family received an electricity bill amounting to Rs 20 lakh on Sunday. The family of four claimed to have a few electricity-using items at home and would usually receive a bimonthly power bill of Rs 2,000–2,500.
Panktiben Patel said that the South Gujarat Power Company’s June-July 2024 bill came to an unbelievable Rs 20,01,902 in full.
“We have four bulbs, four fans, a fridge and a TV. Three of us are out working all day. We always pay our bills on time and this error has caused us significant distress,” she said.
When the family reached out to the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB), they were first instructed to submit a formal complaint and pay a fee. However, after the GEB officer investigated the case, it was promptly determined to be a mistake in the meter reading. The bill was corrected within an hour, providing the family with much-needed relief.
