Kutch Industry Body Demands International Flights From Bhuj

| Updated: August 1, 2024 12:57

The Federation of Kutch Industries Association (FOKIA) has called for the introduction of international and cargo flights from Bhuj airport as well as expansion or relocation of Kandla airport to cater to the growing need of connectivity of thriving industrial units in the border district. In a statement, FOKIA Managing Director Nimish Phadke highlighted the urgent need for expanded air connectivity to support the increasing demands of businesses in the Kutch district.

The industry chamber has formally approached the Airport Authority of India and the Union Civil Aviation Minister, requesting the launch of international flights to key destinations such as Dubai and East African countries.

FOKIA also emphasised the need for improved domestic connectivity, specifically the restoration of the Bhuj-Mumbai flight and the introduction of new routes to Delhi and Ahmedabad. These routes are critical for business travellers, as many industrial enterprises headquartered in these cities require efficient morning and evening flight options. Currently, Air India and Alliance Air operate daily flights on the Mumbai-Bhuj-Mumbai route, while Star Air services the Ahmedabad-Bhuj-Ahmedabad sector. The demand for better connectivity comes amid a significant increase in passenger traffic at Bhuj airport.

The airport witnessed a sharp rise from 36,240 passengers in 2022 to 59,456 in 2023, with numbers reaching 66,683 by June 2024. This surge underscores the growing importance of Bhuj as a hub for both passenger and cargo traffic.

Kutch’s industrial sector is a major contributor to the economy, producing goods worth approximately Rs 5 lakh crore annually. FOKIA argues that the introduction of cargo flights from Bhuj airport could significantly boost the region’s agricultural and horticultural exports, potentially generating a cargo handling business worth Rs 300 crore per annum.

The existing infrastructure, however, is inadequate to meet these needs, particularly at Kandla airport. Located near the critical ports of Kandla and Mundra, which handle 35% of India’s sea-borne cargo, the airport currently cannot accommodate wide-body aircraft due to its short runway and limited passenger facilities.

To address these challenges, FOKIA has proposed the development of a new greenfield airport near Kandla. This new facility would enhance the region’s air connectivity, facilitating the efficient movement of goods and people. The association’s proposal underscores the need for strategic infrastructure development to support the continued growth and competitiveness of Kutch’s industrial sector.

As the region continues to evolve into a significant industrial hub, the demand for enhanced air connectivity becomes increasingly critical. The successful implementation of FOKIA’s proposals could transform Bhuj airport into a key node in India’s aviation network, boosting the local economy and supporting the region’s industrial ambitions.
