The Congress party in Gujarat has announced to take out a ‘Nyay Yatra’ with an aim to providing justice to the victims of the tragedies that have taken place in the state in recent times, leading to several deaths and injuries. This ‘Nyay Yatra’ will be started from August 9, the date on which the Quit India Movement against the British injustice had started in 1942.
The ‘Nyay Yatra’ has been organised by the Congress to ensure justice to the victims of Rajkot game zone fire, Harni lake boat tragedy in Vadodara, Morbi bridge incident, Takshashila coaching institute fire in Surat and Una dalit incident. The journey of justice will begin from Morbi.
According to information received, the Congress will organise a two-part Nyay Yatra in the state. The first phase of the Yatra is going to start from Morbi to Rajkot, which will also touch Chotila and Viramgam. The Congress will meet the victims of Morbi bridge collapse, Rajkot game zone fire as well as others during this leg of the journey. The second phase of the Yatra will start from Surat. At the same time, it is coming to light that Rahul Gandhi may not be involved in this Yatra.
Significantly, a hanging bridge collapsed in Morbi in which more than 140 people were killed in October 2022. There was a sudden fire in the game zone in Rajkot in which 27 people were killed in May this year. Earlier, at least 27 youngsters were killed in the Takshashila Arcade fire in Surat in May 2019.
These incidents brought forth the organisational apathy and unholy nexus of politicians belonging to the ruling party and the corrupt government officials.
The Congress has alleged that while the victims’ families are waiting for justice, those responsible for these accidents are living comfortably outside the jail on bail, while many of those involved have not even been brought to book.
In Gujarat, the BJP has been in power for 1995 i.e. about 30 years, almost decimating the Congress prospects in the state for so many years. But now gradually the Congress has started clawing its way back into relevance, with better people connect. Raising the issues of the people, fighting to get justice for them is a part of the same narrative the Congress is trying to latch on to in a bid to sway people’s opinion. This time the Congress did not allow the BJP’s hat-trick in the Lok Sabha elections and after almost a decade, its Banaskantha candidate Geniben Thakor trounced the BJP in its bastion. The BJP also did not reach its projected mark of ‘400 paar’ in the parliamentary elections.
These indications have buoyed the Congress and it is now going full throttle in the run-up to the 2027 assembly elections in the state. The BJP is certainly feeling the pressure of this new resurgence.
