Tihar Jail and AAP Clash Over Arvind Kejriwal’s Health

| Updated: July 15, 2024 12:55

The Tihar jail administration and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are embroiled in a heated dispute over the health condition of Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. AAP leaders claim that Kejriwal is rapidly losing weight and his health is deteriorating in prison, while jail authorities argue that these claims are intended to pressure the prison administration.

AAP leaders allege that Kejriwal has lost 8.5 kg since his imprisonment and suggest a conspiracy to harm him behind bars. In response, the Tihar jail administration released a detailed update on Kejriwal’s health status.

Kejriwal was arrested on March 21 by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with a corruption case related to Delhi’s now-scrapped liquor policy. He was briefly out on bail to campaign for the Lok Sabha election before returning to Tihar jail.

According to jail authorities, Kejriwal’s weight was 65 kg when he entered Tihar’s Central Jail No. 2 on April 1. Upon being granted bail on May 10, his weight was 64 kg. When he surrendered again on June 2, his weight was recorded at 63.5 kg. Currently, Kejriwal weighs 61.5 kg.

AAP MP Sanjay Singh previously stated that Kejriwal weighed 70 kg at the time of his arrest and his weight has since dropped to 61.5 kg, indicating a serious health issue.

The jail authorities attribute the weight loss to reduced food intake or low-calorie consumption. They assure that Kejriwal is under continuous medical supervision, with his vitals checked daily and treatment provided as needed.

Contrary to AAP’s claims that Kejriwal’s blood sugar levels have dropped multiple times, the jail report states that his blood sugar is being monitored and his vitals are currently within normal limits. The report also mentions that Kejriwal is receiving home-cooked food three times a day.

AAP’s Sanjay Singh insists that the jail report confirms Kejriwal’s weight loss and fluctuating blood sugar levels, warning of potential health risks such as coma or brain stroke.

The AAP has expressed concern over Kejriwal’s health, accusing the BJP and the central government of conspiring to keep him in jail and jeopardise his well-being. In response, the BJP’s Delhi unit leader Virendra Sachdeva accused AAP leaders of staging a “drama” to mislead the court and secure Kejriwal’s bail.
