On a day when Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the cooperative sector in Gandhinagar on Saturday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said that they would defeat the BJP in Gujarat.
Shah is on a two-day visit to his home state. However, it was Gandhi, who was in the news the whole day.
Gandhi addressed party workers at the Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan in Ahmedabad. He then met family members of the victims of Rajkot TRP gaming zone fire tragedy, Harni boat tragedy and Morbi bridge collapse.
The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha also met family members of the Congress workers, who were arrested in connection with clashes that took place following the BJP workers vandalizing the party office.
Agitated over Gandhi’s remarks in the Parliament, the BJP workers had vandalized the Congress office a couple of days ago. Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil had requested Gandhi to be in Gujarat.
“The way they broke our office, we will break their government,” he said.
This was Gandhi’s first visit to Gujarat after becoming opposition leader in the Parliament.
Taking Ayodhya as the case, Gandhi said that they will defeat Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP leaders in Gujarat like in Ayodhya. He said the INDIA Alliance has defeated the movement whose Centre was Ayodhya.
The Congress leader claimed that Modi wanted to contest from Ayodhya but surveys conducted thrice indicated that the BJP is losing. Even from Varanasi, Modi barely managed to win by over a margin of 1.50 lakh votes, he remarked.
Hours before Gandhi arrived at the Congress headquarters, party workers and leaders had started pouring in. It was unprecedented the manner in which people had gathered.
Congress leaders said that Gandhi’s visit was important as it has enthused them ahead of the elections to gram panchayats that are due later this year.
Meanwhile, Gandhi had also found a mention in the two-day executive committee of the BJP that ended in Botad on July 5. Union Minister Piyush Goyal had referred to Gandhi’s speech in the Parliament in which he had mentioned defeating the BJP in Gujarat. Albeit, Goyal resorted to sarcasm as he said that it is for the third time that Gandhi has exhibited his “Balak Buddhi”. In several areas of the country, the Congress has not opened its account and the BJP has formed government in four states with majority.
