The Congress, buoyant by recent encouraging performances in the Lok Sabha elections, has given a call for ‘Rajkot Bandh’ today to mark the first monthly anniversary of the gruesome fire tragedy at the city’s TRP Game Zone, which claimed 27 lives.
Gujarat Congress president Shaktisinh Gohil urged shopkeepers and owners of other establishments in Rajkot city to keep their premises closed for half a day in memory of the deceased. This morning, the Congress activists were found attempting to close some of the schools that remained open.
“I urge all residents of Rajkot city to observe a half-day ‘bandh’ on June 25 (Tuesday) to remember those who lost their lives in the fire tragedy on May 25. We are giving this bandh call so that the government ensures justice. We have also urged the management of schools and colleges to join the bandh,” said Gohil yesterday.
Congress wants justice for the victims and their families, Shaktsinh Maintained, denying any political motive behind the strike call. The Raja Sabha MP added that “I am confident people will come forward voluntarily and keep their establishments shut. Our workers will visit markets tomorrow to urge shopkeepers to observe a bandh. There will be no use of force. We will only request them with folded hands,”
Gujarat Congress working president and MLA Jignesh Mevani and former Gujarat Congress Chief Amit Chavda also made appeals to make the bandh successful. The ongoing inquiry into the tragedy by a state government-appointed special investigation team (SIT) will be of no use if its report does not become part of the charge sheet in the case, Congress said. Congress cited the example of the Morbi Bridge tragedy (of October 2022), where the SIT report was not part of the charge sheet.
The opposition accused the government of limiting it’s probe to catching junior officials like the town planner and leaving big fish unharmed.
It is worth noting that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi interacted with relatives of some of the fire tragedy victims via Zoom call and expressed solidarity with them.
3 more accused were produced in court in the TRP fire incident in Rajkot. The crime branch arrested more accused in the fire investigation. I V Kher, Bhikha Theba and Mahesh Rathore were arrested by the police in the investigation of the fire incident. The crime branch and the police are also continuously interrogating various people in the fire incident, even when the SIT probe is going on.
