Gujarat HC Lifts Stay on ‘Maharaj’, Denies Sect-Specific Targeting

| Updated: June 21, 2024 18:22

The Gujarat High Court on Friday lifted the interim stay on the release of Maharaj, the debut film of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s son Junaid, stating that there is nothing insulting in the movie and it is not directed at the Pushtimarg sect as alleged.

The movie is based on a libel case from 1862 involving social reformer Karsandas Mulji, a prominent Vaishnavite religious figure.

A few members of the Pushtimarg sect had filed a petition against its release on Netflix, alleging that it hurt religious sentiments.

On June 13, Justice Sangeeta Vishen issued an interim stay on the movie’s release on the OTT platform.

The film has CBFC certification and does not specifically target the sect, as the judge stated in her ruling.
