Trump Signals Green For Greencard to Techies, If Elected

| Updated: June 21, 2024 11:45

While Democrats are in a dilemma over whether to continue with Joe Biden as their presidential candidate or not, due to his apparent health concerns related to age, former US President Donald Trump has issued a Trump card promising a green card to foreign graduates from American universities. The remark is seen as beneficial to Indian students in particular.

Trump’s stance expressed during a podcast highlights his softening stance on the immigration issue. American elections are due in November 2024. Recently, Joe Biden announced his plans, which would legalise around 5,00,000 illegal immigrants living in the US for more than 10 years and married to an American spouse.

Trump’s latest views on immigration are in contradiction with his stated wish to end H-1B visas during the 2016 elections. Trump had shown his aversion to American companies hiring cheap labour through the H1B route, from countries like India at the expense of American workers.

Trump’s latest views include anybody who graduates from a college and completes a two-year programme. His comments to bring in the “best and the brightest” to America come as a surprise, as during his 2017–2021 presidency, Trump had ordered the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border.
