David Johnson, a former Indian cricketer, passed away in Bengaluru on Thursday. He was 52 years old.
The former fast bowler, Johnson, is well-known for his brief stint playing for the Indian cricket team. He had played two Tests for India in 1996, taking three wickets. Cricket fans throughout the world are shocked by the news of his death.
“Saddened to hear the passing of my cricketing colleague David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon ‘Benny’!” Anil Kumble posted on X (formally Twitter).
BCCI Secretary Jay Shah also reacted to the shocking news. “Deepest condolences to family and friends of our former Indian fast bowler David Johnson. His contributions to the game will always be remembered,” he said.
Throughout his domestic cricket career, Johnson accomplished a great deal. His remarkable haul of 125 wickets came from 39 first-class matches. Four five-wicket innings and an incredible 10 wickets in one outing were among his standout efforts. Against Kerala in the 1995–96 Ranji Trophy season, he struck 10 for 152, one of his most impressive domestic performances. His inclusion on the national team was largely due to this performance.
Johnson played his first Test match for India in a one-off game held in New Delhi in 1996 against Australia. In this match, he managed to make a quick impact by dismissing the Australian opener, Michael Slater. It was this match that launched Johnson’s brief international career.
Johnson’s inclusion in the Indian team for the South Africa tour came after his debut. He played in the opening Test match of the series and took Brian McMillan and Herschelle Gibbs wickets to further highlight his ability as a fast bowler. This would be one of his final games for the national team, despite his bright start.
