Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday announced that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, will retain the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh and leave the Wayanad seat in Kerala, where his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be contesting.
Kharge had discussed the matter at his New Delhi residence with the top leadership of the party.
“Rahul Gandhi won from two Lok Sabha seats, but as per the law, he has to vacate one. Rahul Gandhi will retain Rae Bareli, and we have decided that Priyanka ji will fight from Wayanad,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, and Sonia Gandhi, the chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, were among those present during the meeting.
Rahul Gandhi stated that Wayanad and Rae Bareli “will get two MPs” following the decision.
Rahul Gandhi must give up one of the seats he won in the Lok Sabha from the Wayanad and Rae Bareli constituencies within 14 days of the results, which were announced on June 4.
“I won’t let the people of Wayanad feel Rahul’s absence,” Priyanka Gandhi said.
